At the end of this past semester, FLY held it's final event of the year showcasing the work of all it's design students. In an quiet neighborhood in the center of Florence, Italy, the store opened it's doors fully into their space to show students and italians alike the final collection.
FLY, fashion loves you, is the fashion program for the Florence University of the arts. Students from all over the US and other countries like France were able to display their work on a live action runway. A dj had the music pumping in the room filled with colorful ribbon. Two lines of chairs created a center walkway for the models and everyone was eagerly waiting for them to begin walking.
The outfits were centered around bright and neon colors, contrasted with white. The pieces were very structured and geometric, there were only a few with a lot of movement to them. It made me feel as if I was in some Mediterranean city close to the beach where everyone is chic, bright and just a little bougie. A city from the future where there is a whole new way of dressing and accessorizing. The collection made a perfect addition to the event's theme of "Future Visions."
Some of my favorite things about the show were the accessories. I loved the origami-esque headpieces many models wore, along with the handbags that had bright colored netting wrapped around cotton. Both of them elevated each outfit to another level of chic.

All together there were about 15 looks from different students. While each look follows the theme, and has similar features to another, you can always see the designers touch on the pieces. It's not hard to tell that individual had something different in mind while they were designing. The color an structure is what keeps the collection cohesive.
However, I'm glad that each student was able to completely make their own creation. It's almost like project runway, in the fact that the students were given the challenge and had to make something unique but that fit within the constraints they were given.
Expressing your creativity is so important, for anyone not just students. Using your ideas and skills to create something your proud of is one of the best feelings. Especially when you get to show it off to an entire group of people. It helps strength your craft, put your work out in the open, and can boost self-confidence.

At my home university, the fashion students have an end of year fashion show where design students can submit and showcase their collections. Because of that, this event felt really familiar. It was in a much smaller venue than the Threads show, but what isn't small in Italy?
I was so impressed by everyone at FLY for this show and the designs. It should show how capable college students are at being major players in the fashion industry, and even more than that - the power in institutions appreciating the arts. Making a space for students who may not have been given another chance to do something like this in their hometowns or at another university can bring on so many positives in the students' lives. That's really what these events are all about. Not just showcasing trends, or inspiration for pieces to add to your wardrobe; but to give talent the space it deserves.
