OOTD: Dark alley in a black hoodie

The transition from winter to spring usually results in people bringing out bright colors and floral prints – but I like to keep my cold weather looks around for a just a bit longer.

This look is pretty simple at its core, but I spice it up with this DIY hoodie. I was inspired by a photo of Bella Hadid wearing a Nike hoodie with safety pins. It was impactful, yet simple so I decided to make my own.

All I needed to create this piece is a sweatshirt, safety pins, and scissors. I already had some safety pins and scissors at home to use (if you don’t they’re really inexpensive to buy). I bought an all black hoodie from Target for about $20. It was a basic sweatshirt with a kangaroo pocket - which gave me the perfect guideline to cut along and make it cropped. But if I were to do this again I would buy a larger size or a sweatshirt without a pocket so I could have more control over exactly how cropped I wanted it to be.

The steps to create this piece are extremely simple. First, cut the sweatshirt where ever you desire, and make it cropped. Leave a raw hem at the bottom, and place the safety pins along the edge and other parts of the hoodie as you wish. Try the sleeves, cuffs, hood, get creative! You can always move them around if you change your mind.

In the end, you’ll have a versatile new hoodie to wear and style throughout the year. I tend to wear this in the cooler months, but it would be great in the summer with a cute bra underneath and a pair of shorts, especially if you use a colored hoodie like orange or blue instead of black.

In this particular look, I styled it over a white turtleneck, and a pair of light wash denim jeans. The turtleneck was a key piece to the outfit – both to add contrast, and to keep me warm. After all, it is only 50 degrees in Michigan. We may have been catching some heat waves lately but don’t fool yourself. It’s still chilly out here and layers are key.

The jeans I’m wearing are also from Target. They have really stepped up their clothing selections in the past few months and I am loving it! Especially because their items go up to a size 18 and that makes it possible for more women to enjoy their new options. This specific pair of jeans is from their line wild fable which is more contemporary and trendier then some of their others, like a new day.

To finish it all off, I threw on my Adidas falcons in black and white to match the top, and a pair of earrings that look like daggers from Asos. These earrings are one of my favorites; all I can think about when I wear them is 21 savage saying “Issa knife.”

I wanted to keep the accessories simple to match the overall fit. Nothing extravagant or extremely innovative because sometimes you just want to wear jeans and a hoodie.
